CHANGE YOUR LIFE

“You can either drift through the next ten years of your life or you can have direction over the next ten years” ~ Rick Warren.

So many people are simply drifting through life. There’s no passion, direction, goals; nothing that they are reaching for. They are just existing. So sad.

I know you are not one of those people.

IT’S SO SUBTLE

But sometimes drifting is so subtle, if you aren’t careful you could become one of them.

To avoid drifting, you have to each and every day, make an intentional effort to focus on your goals; what you want out of life.

A few years ago, I found myself drifting. Before I know it, three years had passed and I was no future ahead in one particular area of my life…furthering my education.

I had always wanted to go back to school and get my Masters Degree. It was something that was important to me. When this desire resurfaced, I was about 43 years of age.

Who goes back to school at such a late stage of life?

SIMPLY EXCUSES

I justified not taking the plunge with “reasonable responses.”

… I was too old

… I couldn’t afford it

… I don’t have the time

…all of which was somewhat true.

I say somewhat because we make time for what we want to do. We find the money to do what we need to do even if we have to borrow it. Too old was a cop-out. It was more my ego of having to go to a classroom where I would be among students some of whom could be my children.

How old was Harland Sanders when he franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken? Sixty-two years old.

HOW THE DRIFT HAPPENS

Having bought into my own excuses, I kept telling myself that one day I will when I could afford it and have the time. This began the drift.

I got busy doing other things and soon the strong urge of wanting to go back to school subsided.

I had a good friend with whom I would from time to time, talk about life and the future. She would encourage me to find a way to pursue my dream and I would give her my “reasonable responses.”

Time went by and before long three years had passed. I couldn’t believe it. Where did the time go?

Have you ever said that to yourself? Is there something you wanted to do or want to do and have been delaying it? What’s you’re “reasonable response?”

Fast forward: I finally took the plunge at 47 years of age…

… I was four years older. I found the time. And I took out a student loan. Go figure.

I did get the Masters Degree and became the first member of my family to have done that. Yay!

MAKE TIME

What are you waiting for? Remember, whether you do or not, time will go by. Drifting will occur. You will only have gained one thing: REGRET.

But you can change that. Take a step of faith. Go after your dream.

I like the words of Earl Nightingale, “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

Having someone to talk to was helpful to me. Thank God it was the RIGHT person. It was someone who believed in me and was not Ms. Debbie Downer.

FIND THE RIGHT PERSON

Maybe you need that RIGHT person.

I don’t know if I’m the RIGHT person or not, but I do know one thing, I’ve helped people like you do what I did.

I realize that my issue wasn’t my “reasonable excuses” but more so a MINDSET ISSUE. This was a significant discovery and breakthrough.

Now, whenever I’m facing a new challenge, my first strategy is to get my mindset right.

That’s some of the areas I help my coaching clients work through.  If your mindset is not right, nothing else will be.
