ACTS OF SERVICE IS MORE THAN A LOVE LANGUAGE

Would you agree with me that some people are more helpful than others? I’m sure you would 😃

I’ve seen people who do things for others again and again and think nothing of it.

I have a close family member who is like that.

I’ve never seen someone who is so giving. He is almost always thinking of how he can help someone. If he goes to the store he often times will purchase two of the same items and find someone to give one to. I’m often a recipient of such. (Sidenote: I like it when I am. Haha 😃)

At work, he is always looking for ways to serve his co-workers. They are amazed at his spirit of serving. He is simply one of a kind.

I must confess that he puts me to shame. I wish at times I had half of his attitude toward serving others. It doesn’t come as natural for me. I have to be very conscious and intentional. I have to work at it–practice has helped.

NATURE OR NURTURE

My question is this: did he learn to be that way or was he born that way?  Is it nature/nurture on display or is it both? I want to think it’s nature/nurture.

Here’s the thing: by looking on someone like my family member and then measuring ourselves by what he does and somehow think there’s something wrong with us because we are not that way, is not wise.

Yet. It. Happens. Lots. Of. Time.

It happens among couples, co-workers, siblings, business partners; wherever people are engaged in relationships of some kind.

IT COULD BE MISINTERPRETED

Sometimes it is perceived as “kissing up” or “trying to buy favor” when really it’s a natural thing for them. They cannot see themselves doing any less.

Because I’m not that way, I have to come to terms with that.

Knowing the importance of serving, I make myself do it as mentioned above.

How about you? Do you find serving to be more challenging for you as it is for me?

If so, what if anything, do you do about it?

I would love to hear your story now that I’ve shared mine with you. Let’s have a dialogue on this. Comment below letting me know your thoughts.

On my next blog post, I’ll share what may be more like you or me. We’ll have to wait until then to find out.
