WHY CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

As a leader, one of your main priorities should be to create a safe environment for your team where they can feel free to share ideas and make mistakes.

To do so requires that you put in place policy and procedures where everyone understands that this is one of the core values of the organization.

It also requires that you continue to revisit these policies and procedures on a regular basis. It’s so easy for people to forget. Remember, vision “leaks.”

WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

Research shows that when a leader does his or her best to make their team members feel safe, the team members will do everything in their power to make the vision and mission of the organization successful.

Employees exert a lot of energy in trying to protect themselves when the environment doesn’t feel safe. They watch what they say even in how they offer suggestions that might be helpful to the success of the organization.

Imagine how great ideas that could be beneficial to the company, might be kept locked away simply because workers are afraid of the “consequence” of sharing them.

As a leader, make it your priority to create a safe environment where your people can spend less of their energy on self-preservation.

An “unsafe” environment can add unnecessary and avoidable stress to your team because they have to worry about what they say, making mistakes, and retribution from management.
