AN EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT LEADER IS NECESSARY

Nature or nurture?

I’ve been asked that question and at times posed it to others especially on the topic of leadership. There are over 104 million searches that I came across doing a Google search. This simply says to me that many people are curious as to which comes first.

This blog post is not about trying to add one more argument or conversation about that. However, based upon a number of studies, it has become apparent that the most effective and successful leaders are those who have nurtured themselves in the area of leadership.

Recently I was interviewed on The Entrepreneurial You Podcast hosted by Heneka Watkis-Porter and based on the questions she asked, I was able to go a bit deeper in why it is important to become an emotionally intelligent leader.

In one of the segments, I quoted this statistic:

“85% of our financial success is due to skills and human engineering and the ability to communicate, negotiate and lead”.

This means that the majority of our success is due to nurture and not nature. Leaders who take the time to develop themselves through Emotional Intelligence will be far more effective in the long run.

Maybe you are one of the skeptics who are not from the “emotional school.” And you’re thinking this is not for me; I’m simply not the emotional type.

I get this initial response from a number of people especially men.

However, when you are able to see that this is not a push to become more emotional. It is simply an attempt to get you to become more self-aware and be able to manage relationships around you.

Your success is mostly based on your ability to manage the emotions of the people whom you lead.

I share some more of this concept in the interview with Heneka as mentioned above.
