PROBLEM SOLVING
“If your problem can be solved with an action, you don’t have a problem, you have self-doubt” ~ Mel Robbins.
Most people are stuck where they are in life and if you ask them why they’ll begin to list the number of problems that have kept them stuck.
I’ve been guilty of that.
I would start off my conversation with these words: “The problem is…” and then I would give a litany of reasons why these problems get in the way.
However, if I had paused to think it through and had heard Mel Robbins’ talk that addressed the issue of problems, I would have taken a different approach to my problem(s).
If you think about it, the problem can be solved. I believe every problem has a solution. It’s finding the solution and having the courage to implement it.
NOT WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE
It’s not that we don’t know what we need to do most of the times, it’s that the options we have available to us require something of us that we are not willing to “pay.” For us, the “price” is too high.
That’s really the problem: we are not willing to pay the price.
In 2008, I wanted to start my business. I thought about this for a long time. I prayed about it. I sought indirect counsel about it until I finally made the decision to resign from my job.
It was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make.
The problem was finances.
WRONG QUESTIONS
These were some of the financial questions that plagued me:
- Could I afford to take the risk?
- Could I afford to live on an unpredictable salary?
- What if my meager savings ran out quicker than I anticipated?
- Do I have enough money saved up?
- Would my wife and 2 children be able to live on her salary while I build my business?
These are just some of the financial questions that I had to wrestle with. It’s almost as if I wanted a perfect scenario before I made the decision and hence I waited longer to “pull the trigger.”
I noticed that the longer I delayed the decision, the bigger my problem became as more and more unanswered questions were added to the mix.
Did I have a solution at the time I began thinking about transitioning into my own business? You bet I did. But the “price” to pay was too steep in my mind.
I have since realized there is always going to be a price to pay for progress, growth, success, doing what you love, new experiences, and so on.
You and I cannot get away from that.
ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
So I suggest as you look at your problem, ask these right questions.
- How can I do this?
- Who could help me if I needed someone?
- Do I know anyone who’ve done it before that I could talk with?
- What’s the worst that could happen and if it did, would I know what to do?
The last question is normally the most important. And I guarantee you would know what to do if the worst happens.
I know this is not a topic for the faint of heart but for those who know there is more to life and if they don’t live it or go after it, they will end up with regrets. Don’t let that be you.
